It’s February, so of course, you gotta have heart!
Six weeks into my role as interim senior vice president for health sciences, I truly am amazed at the dedication and determination of the people who are working to build a healthier Arizona.
Look at the progress we're making:
- On Feb. 23, we’re celebrating the grand opening of the Biomedical Sciences Partnership Building on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus. This facility will help transform the heart of downtown Phoenix into a cutting-edge biosciences hub.
- Two new construction projects on the Tucson health sciences campus are well underway as well. The Health Sciences Innovation Building and the Bioscience Research Laboratories will serve as 21st century models of collaborative research and innovative learning space.
- Our unprecedented partnership with Banner Health continues to shape the future of academic medicine. The new Banner – University Medical Center Tucson nine-story hospital tower, slated to open in 2019, and the new outpatient clinics now under construction will be a game-changer for patient care throughout Southern Arizona.
From my vantage point, the UA’s land grant legacy, enacted with the passage of the Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862, is more relevant today than ever before. Our work at the UA Health Sciences — like the university’s land-grant mission — emphasizes the educational access, research and outreach to ensure that we have a local and global impact on health every day.
And as we look forward, we're also looking back to honor where we started.
This year, we’re proud to celebrate the anniversaries of the UA Colleges of Pharmacy (70th), Nursing (60th), Medicine – Tucson (50th) and Medicine – Phoenix (10th), the UA Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health (17th), the UA Health Sciences Library (50th), UA Cancer Center (40th), UA Sarver Heart Center (30th) and UA Steele Children’s Research Center (25th).
The collaborative spirit that fueled these health sciences institutions is alive and well today, and your support is important more than ever before as we continue to strengthen the foundation of excellence established many years ago.
We’re building a better world, and we’re doing it together. Thank you for being a part of it.
