The Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship Program shares major clinical training sites at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix and the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Banner – UMC Phoenix provides exposure to the practice of endocrinology in the setting of a very active inpatient consultation service with a designated supervising endocrinologist for the inpatient service. The outpatient general clinic endocrinology practice provides exposure to reproductive endocrinology, thyroid biopsies, insulin pump/cgm interpretation and management and DXA interpretation.

The Phoenix Veterans Affairs Medical Center is the primary site and provides wide exposure to a variety of endocrine disorders found in the U.S. veteran population, such as diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, lipoprotein disorders, disorders of calcium and electrolytes, thyroid disease, adrenal disease, hypothalamic/pituitary disease and gonadal disorders.

A dedicated research block of four to five months occurs during the second year of training. Fellows are also encouraged to submit abstracts to regional and national meetings, present papers, write manuscripts for submission to journals and publish their work in a peer-reviewed journal. The fellowship provides travel expenses to annual conferences to present abstracts/posters and provides a stipend for a board review course to senior fellows.
