Outstanding scholarship and teaching skills are essential for excellent graduate medical education programs. The Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix, working with the Arizona Consortium of Family Medicine Residency Directors, has created a new year-long Faculty Development Fellowship at the Phoenix campus. Co-directed by HonorHealth’s Family Medicine Residency program director Cynthia Kegowicz, MD and Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix's director Steven R. Brown, MD, the first group of 15 fellows started in September 2014. Current fellows are residents and faculty from five Arizona family medicine residencies: Yuma Regional, HonorHealth, Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix, St. Joseph’s and Phoenix Baptist.
Topics covered in the half-day per month sessions include leadership, advocacy, information mastery, scholarship in family medicine and precepting; skills needed to teach and lead in a constantly changing medical education environment. All fellows will attend the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Annual Spring Conference in April 2015 and many will present scholarly work. A true collaborative effort, the sessions are taught entirely by volunteer faculty and are organized by the program directors of the involved family medicine residency programs. The fellowship will provide much needed faculty development for years to come for the future of family medicine in Arizona.
