The intersession course is designed as a series of opportunities for all third and fourth year students to convene in a classroom/seminar setting to meet specific educational goals (knowledge, skills and attitudes) best addressed while students are actively involved in patient care. The Intersessions also provide opportunities for students to come together for collaborative and reflective time in their journey of becoming a physician. Curricular formats and learning strategies will vary to accommodate the variety of content and learning.
Course Content
The Intersession content will include:
- Topics that will enhance the curriculum content as well as revist the basic sciences in the clinical context.
- Curricular themes of: Ethics, P3 (Public Health/Population Health/Prevention), Biomedical Informatics, Behavioral Health and Healthcare Transformation
- Clinical Radiology.
- Clinical Pharmacology.
- Narrative medicine and journaling.
- Advanced skills development, e.g., OSCE for domestic violence and Year 3 OSCE preparation.
- Academic Affairs and Student Affairs activities and career advising and preparation.
Course Organization
The Intersession course is conducted in two, one-week intervals during Year 3 and two concurrent weeks during Year 4. Individual sessions vary in presentation methodology and may be formatted as: didactics, workshops, panels, small group discussions, standardized patient simulations or self-study modules. Attendance is required and punctuality is critical for all sessions.
