Iannis E. Adamopoulos, DPhil, Joins the Department of Internal Medicine as Vice Chair of Research
Iannis E. Adamopoulos, DPhil, has joined the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix’s Department of Internal Medicine as the vice chair of Research.
Dr. Adamopoulos comes to the college from Harvard Medical School. He earned his DPhil from the University of Oxford and completed postdoctoral training at Washington University in St. Louis and the DNAX Research Institute in Palo Alto, California. Prior to his move to Harvard, he served as an endowed and tenured professor of Medicine at the University of California, Davis.
“Dr. Adamopoulos is a distinguished investigator from Harvard Medical School who studies how autoimmunity and inflammation lead to diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. His recruitment to the College’s Department of Internal Medicine as vice chair of Research brings us to the forefront of research discovery and innovation in the immune system,” said Dean Fred Wondisford, MD, MS, MBA.
Dr. Adamopoulos has a longstanding interest in osteoimmunology, the study of interactions between the immune and skeletal systems as they relate to rheumatic diseases and inflammatory arthritis. He has authored more than 80 original articles and reviews published in leading journals, including BMJ, Immunity, the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Nature Communications, Nature Reviews Rheumatology, Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, and Arthritis & Rheumatology.
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Adamopoulos, whose leadership will play a key role in expanding and strengthening our research enterprise,” said Michael Fallon, MD, chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. “As vice chair of Research, he will help grow interdisciplinary and translational research programs across the department, strengthen collaboration among specialties, and support faculty and trainees in developing innovative, funded research initiatives.”
In this role, Dr. Adamopoulos will also advance the department’s translational research mission by helping bridge discoveries from the laboratory to clinical practice.
About the College
Founded in 2007, the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix inspires and trains exemplary physicians, scientists and leaders to advance its core missions in education, research, clinical care and service to communities across Arizona. The college’s strength lies in our collaborations and partnerships with clinical affiliates, community organizations and industry sponsors. With our primary affiliate, Banner Health, we are recognized as the premier academic medical center in Phoenix. As an anchor institution of the Phoenix Bioscience Core, the college is home to signature research programs in neurosciences, cardiopulmonary diseases, immunology, informatics and metabolism. These focus areas uniquely position us to drive biomedical research and bolster economic development in the region.
As an urban institution with strong roots in rural and tribal health, the college has graduated more than 1,000 physicians and matriculates 130 students each year. Greater than 60% of matriculating students are from Arizona and many continue training at our GME sponsored residency programs, ultimately pursuing local academic and community-based opportunities. While our traditional four-year program continues to thrive, we will launch our recently approved accelerated three-year medical student curriculum with exclusive focus on primary care. This program is designed to further enhance workforce retention needs across Arizona.
