Xianfeng Frank Zhao, MD, PhD, MBA
Appointed as the chair of the Department of Pathology, Dr. Zhao came to the Phoenix VA Health Care System in 2016 as chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service and joined the UArizona College of Medicine – Phoenix faculty as a clinical professor of Pathology.
Prior to arriving in Phoenix, Dr. Zhao was at the University of California San Diego as a clinical professor and director of Clinical Core Laboratory at the San Diego VAMC. Dr. Zhao's educational background includes receiving his medical degree from Shandong Medical University. He then went on to obtain a MSc in Microbiology and Immunology from the Academy of Military Medical Sciences, Beijing and a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Zhao completed postdoctoral research at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the Pathology Residency at the University of Buffalo and the Hematopathology Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Finally, he received his MBA from the Robert H. Smith School of Business of University of Maryland.
Dr. Zhao has been interested in the discovery of biomarkers for the diagnosis and molecular targets for the treatment of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). He is particularly interested in precision pathology and believes that the junctional molecules (“nodes”) between different signal transduction pathways are critical therapeutic targets for cancer therapy. He continues to pursue both independent and collaborative endeavors in discovering novel biomarkers and evaluating therapeutic targets of hematologic malignancies.
