Seminar Title

  • Measuring What Matters: AI Standardized Patients and the Future of Competency Assessments for Health Care Professionals
    Guest Speaker

Abstract

Health care quality is multidimensional, encompassing not only clinical knowledge but also reasoning, communication, decision-making, and other aspects of provider performance. However, commonly used assessment tools, including multiple-choice examinations and clinical data audits, capture only a portion of these competencies. Standardized patients and direct observation can provide richer measures of clinical performance, but they are difficult and costly to scale.

Advances in generative AI may offer a new approach. AI-enabled standardized patients can simulate interactive clinical encounters, allowing health care workers to engage in open-ended conversations, make clinical decisions, and receive structured assessment of their performance. This talk will examine the emerging field of AI-enabled standardized patients for clinical competency assessment, drawing on recent research and application examples from the United States and globally.
