Brief Bio

Taben Hale, PhD — the vice chair of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS), as well as a professor of BMS, Internal Medicine and Clinical Translational Sciences — was recruited to the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix in 2008. An exceptional mentor, researcher and teacher, Dr. Hale is the leader of a nationally recognized research program investigating the consequences of high blood pressure on the structure and function of the heart.

Her contributions have helped to elevate the college’s reputation as a stellar institution for translational research; and her work has received several prestigious grant awards from the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Hale’s lab studies how medications used to treat hypertension may provide insight into novel treatments to produce long-lasting protection against heart disease; seeks to reduce the risk of heart failure in patients with high blood pressure; evaluates the impact of prenatal stress on regulation of blood pressure, heart rate and behavioral function; and more.

In her time with the college, Dr. Hale has contributed to the strong culture of campus collaboration and support for women in medicine. She is the director of the college's Women in Medicine and Science group, which she helped to launch in 2015. And she has mentored award-winning postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and aspiring researchers through the BMS' Summer Internship Program.
