The health and wellness of our residents is paramount. To help facilitate their well-being, the Psychiatry Residency offers benefits, resources, events and a myriad of other programs.
Programs and Resources
- The Banner – UMC Phoenix Wellness Space, located in 12D of tower 2, provides a space for residents, medical students and fellows to relax from the stresses of work.
- There is time made available for any type of medical appointments.
- We will work with you on a personal wellness plan.
- Meal cards are provided.
- Four weeks vacation are allotted each year.
- Per our Sick Time Policy (PDF), residents receive five days per year.
- Education Days:
- PGY1 – Two days.
- PGY2 – Three days.
- PGY3 and PGY4 – Five days.
- Money for conference travel is provided and additional funds are offered for residents who are presenting.
- Resident-driven call schedule.
- No night float on psychiatry.
- We hold a monthly department wellness lunch.
- The fourth Wednesday of each month, 12:00-1:00 p.m., in the large conference room.
- Monthly Wellness Curriculum is provided for faculty and residents.
- Free covered parking is offered.
- Lactation rooms are available throughout the Banner – UMC Phoenix campus.
- Free Health insurance is provided to each resident, as well as their family/partner.

- The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix provides a discount for Mountainside Fitness membership.
- If needed due to fatigue, free taxi/Uber rides are provided for residents heading home post-call.
- We have a GME Physician Wellness Committee, as well as a Department of Psychiatry Wellness Subcommittee.
- University of Arizona and Banner Partners in Medicine program.
- The College of Medicine – Phoenix Art in Medicine program offers residents a creative outlet to relieve stress.
