There are several Fellowships Supported and Sponsored by the Family, Community and Preventive Medicine Department.
The Department of Family, Community, and Preventive Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix is committed to advancing family medicine through a variety of fellowship programs. These programs are designed to foster holistic educational development in the specialty of Family Medicine, the premiere primary care specialty. We aim to prepare physicians to serve the diverse needs of our Arizona communities and beyond.
- Maternal Child Health Fellowship
This fellowship is designed for physicians seeking specialized training in maternal and child health. It offers comprehensive clinical experience and education in prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal care, equipping fellows with the skills necessary to provide comprehensive, high-quality care to mothers and children.
- Community Medicine Fellowship
Aimed at primary care physicians, this 12-month clinical fellowship focuses on developing expertise in caring for populations affected by social and structural determinants of health. The program emphasizes evidence-based care, cultural competency, leadership, advocacy, healthcare access, and innovative research. - Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship
The Family Medicine Department sponsors the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship, which offers an outstanding training experience in advanced sports medicine, musculoskeletal diagnosis and treatment, and team and event coverage. The fellowship prepares and qualifies fellows to attain the ABFM CAQ in sports medicine.
- Addiction Medicine
This fellowship was developed by the Family Medicine residency in partnership with Toxicology and Obstetrics and Gynecology, out of an observation that primary care physicians can provide life-saving services to assist patients who suffer from addiction. It is now a multispecialty center-based program, including multiple collaborators across BUMCP departments and the VA. The department continues to sponsor this ACGME-accredited fellowship and counts this among one of our most important contributions to holistic care for the community.
- Faculty Development Fellowship Support
This program is tailored for faculty members and senior residents aiming to enhance their academic teaching and leadership skills. This program that was developed by the Family Medicine Faculty is open to all specialties now, but remains of great value to the primary care community, where excellent teaching occurs outside the academic center walls and in our communities, with community partners. Participants engage in a comprehensive curriculum covering adult learning theory, effective precepting, feedback provision, information mastery, and physician wellness. The fellowship emphasizes practical application, enabling educators to refine their teaching methodologies and contribute to the advancement of medical education.
