Curriculum

Fellows will focus on managing laboring patients, performing c-sections and tubal ligations. The training takes place at Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix in partnership with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the associated residency program. At this location, fellows work under the direct supervision of obstetrics (OB) attendings on a high-volume labor and delivery unit.  Opportunities to also provide Family Medicine OB attending coverage when ready.
Fellows will also work in more community hospital-oriented sites of difference sizes and service breadth, including Banner Ocotillo and Banner Casa Grande under the direction of Sun Life Health, a local Federally Qualified Health Center. Additional experiences include clinical days at Banner Payson, a rural critical access hospital that can be accessed in a day trip, working under the director of co-fellowship director, Dr. Roberta Matern, MD, a family physician who provides maternity care and surgical obstetrical deliveries in the community.  Fellows can participate in community outreach work with the Wesley Community Health Center population, including mobile OB care outreach services.

Fellows will focus on taking part in both Family Medicine and OB/GYN clinics.  The program will have some degree of personalization in additional procedures as desired, needed and available, which can include colposcopy, D&C, and birth control.
This is a new fellowship, so there is some fluidity and ongoing development, based on fellows’ feedback to optimize the learning experiences.
