Locations

Banner - University Medical Center in downtown Phoenix, Banner Ocotillo in Chandler, Banner Casa Grande, and Banner Desert. These sites allow you to practice in high-volume/high acuity academic and community settings, a moderate lower-risk community hospital, and a sole community hospital that is adjacent to a tribal community.  All are within driving distance. 

Comptencies
  • 100 vaginal Deliveries (can be combined with residency)
  • 100 C- sections as primary (greater than 50%)
  • 5 vacuum assisted vaginal deliveries
  • Management of 1st and 2nd degree perineal laceration, knowledgeable about 3rd degree repiar
  • Management of IUFD
  • Management of higher-risk OB prenatal care including twin, diabetes, HTN and preterm
  • OB triage care
  • US: First trimester dating, growth US, BPP
  • Newborn resuscitation including NRP algorithm with PPV, CPAP, intubation, and UVC placement
  • NICU management of hypoglycemia and neonatal RDS, such as TTN, MAS, PPHN, sepsis
  • NRP and ALSO certifications (will become ALSO instructor in training).

Faculty

BUMCP OB/Gyn faculty, including general OB and MFM, University of Arizona Family Medicine Faculty at Banner University Phoenix, Banner Payson, and Banner Desert, FQHC Faculty, Community Providers, University of Arizona Neonatologists.

Schedule

The schedule is made in collaboration with the fellows and faculty, to assure meaningful longitudinal experiences and opportunity for 3-4 c-sections a week, along with maintenance of FM skills in continuity clinic and fellow well-being. The schedule includes:  

  • Call and coverage on the labor and delivery unit, expect 1-2 overnights per week and 2 our of 4 weekends per month to keep on pace with volume
  • Neonatal resuscitation and management training at Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix
  • Continuity clinic 2-4 half days per week, with a mix of prenatal, women’s health, and full-spectrum family medicine patients
  • OB/prenatal clinics 
  • Inpatient attending shadowing and/or hospitalist moonlighting to keep inpatient skills
  • FM OB attending coverage, when ready and privileged
  • Longitudinal meeting monthly to review cases, journal articles and assigned reading.
  • Clinic and antepartum rounding time with maternal fetal medicine 
  • Attending the AAFP Maternity Care Conference and/or ASCCP colposcopy course.
Evaluation and Feedback

Learning isn’t always a straight line progression and each fellow is unique. Fellows will have quarterly summative evaluations and receive feedback across competencies. Procedure logs along with feedback and progress will be reviewed quarterly with adjustment to schedules as needed to maintain adequate volume and pacing. 

At the conclusion of the fellowship, you will obtain letters of recommendation, certification of your procedure log, and a program letter of completion citing your competency in skills.
