Cardio-Obstetrics Program of Excellence

The Cardio-Obstetrics Program at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix, part of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division, is the leading regional resource for managing pregnancies complicated by heart disease. Our mission is to ensure safe, successful pregnancies for individuals with known or suspected cardiovascular conditions through expert consultation, coordinated co-management and complete obstetric care when needed.

We bring together fellowship-trained maternal-fetal medicine specialists and cardiologists with advanced training in adult congenital heart disease, cardiac imaging, electrophysiology and heart failure. Our team also includes anesthesiologists with expertise in cardiac care during pregnancy, specialized nursing staff and access to every hospital-based subspecialty needed for complex maternal care.

What We Offer

We serve as a referral hub for community obstetricians, internists and cardiologists throughout Arizona and the Southwest. We tailor our involvement to patient and provider needs, offering:

  • Preconception counseling for individuals with congenital or acquired heart disease, arrhythmias or prior pregnancy-related cardiac complications, ensuring optimal maternal and fetal outcomes from the earliest stages.
  • Single time consults for risk assessment and management planning.
  • Shared care in collaboration with a patient’s cardiologist and obstetrician.
  • Full obstetric management for patients with severe or unstable cardiovascular conditions.

We offer same-day with MFM and cardiology, minimizing patient travel and ensuring immediate team-based decision-making. Our coordinated birth planning integrates advanced monitoring, anesthesia readiness and NICU preparedness. We also provide preconception counseling for individuals with heart disease who are planning pregnancy.
