Overview

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Division at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix is a leading referral destination for high-risk pregnancy care in Arizona and the Southwest. Our fellowship-trained MFM specialists provide expert consultation, collaborative co-management and comprehensive care for individuals with medical, surgical, obstetric or fetal complications.

Our division is uniquely structured to offer both specialized program-based services and comprehensive maternal-fetal care. We encompass several multidisciplinary programs, including:

  • High-Risk Obstetrics Hospitalist Group – Providing 24/7 inpatient care and emergency response for critically ill obstetric patients.
  • Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS) Center of Excellence – Dedicated to the coordinated management of abnormal placentation and complex surgical deliveries.
  • Cardio-Obstetrics Program – Integrating obstetric and cardiovascular expertise for patients with congenital or acquired heart disease.

In addition to these focused programs, we manage a broad range of maternal and fetal conditions that require advanced expertise but may not fall within specific subspecialty pathways — ensuring that no high-risk pregnancy need goes unmet.

Our care often begins before pregnancy. We provide preconception counseling for individuals and couples with preexisting medical conditions, previous pregnancy complications or identified fetal risk factors — helping patients and referring providers plan for safe, healthy pregnancies.

What we offer

Our MFM physicians partner closely with referring providers, community obstetricians and other specialists to create personalized, evidence-based care plans. Depending on the patient’s needs, we may:

  • Provide preconception counseling to optimize health before pregnancy.
  • Offer single-time consultations to support ongoing care with the primary obstetrician.
  • Co-manage pregnancies in close collaboration with community providers.
  • Deliver comprehensive obstetric care from the first prenatal visit through delivery and postpartum recovery for high-acuity patients.

Integrated Academic Care

As part of an academic medical center, our division integrates advanced diagnostics, cutting-edge therapies, and the latest clinical research into everyday practice. Patients benefit from:

  • Targeted obstetric ultrasound, fetal echocardiography and prenatal MRI.
  • Seamless access to subspecialty expertise in cardiology, hematology/oncology, hepatology, anesthesiology, surgery and neonatology.
  • Coordinated delivery planning at a tertiary care hospital with Arizona’s highest-level NICU.
