Educational Sessions
- Multiple arts and narrative medicine seminars will be presented across a two-year cycle. Students will need to attend a minimum of 15 seminars over the course of four years.
- Reflective Journal entries: Students will write 10 journal entries per year over four years; entries will be based on learning experiences, as written and/or visual arts, and will be maintained in a portfolio that is reviewed annually by the program's directors.
- This portfolio will include a brief description of the experience, an analysis of ethical principles and how it impacted the student’s development as a physician (a reflection on their emerging professional identity).
- Students must complete at least one four-week Humanities or Ethics elective from an approved list during the fourth year.
- Students must complete an online course activity in Health Humanities during the Personalized Active Learning (PAL) block and use the information gained to direct a community outreach experience (see below).
Community Outreach and Engagement
- Students will participate in narrative/arts-based community outreach programs — such as Creativity in Elder Care, narrative story projects with local collaborators or writing projects at ASU’s Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing — for at least 10 hours over the course of four years.
- Students must lead three activities as part of the Phoenix Art Museum program, Narrative and Diversity Book Club or Film and Medicine screenings tied to humanities in their fourth year.
Patient Care
- Students must complete and write or illustrate a reflection on at least one “Narrative Medicine” patient interview experience per year.
- They must also develop at least one patient perspective writing or art piece to submit for publication in their four years.
Research
- Students will be required to complete an approved scholarly project with a research question relevant to an arts, humanities, narrative and/or bioethics topic.
