Formal didactics are a core component of our fellows’ education, designed to support their development into experts in hematology and oncology. Our comprehensive curriculum includes lectures, journal clubs, case presentations, board review sessions, and national conferences to ensure that fellows are well-prepared for board examinations and their future careers. We also offer a Humanism in Medicine curriculum to further enrich their educational experience.
Academic Thursdays: this is a mandatory weekly half-day dedicated to formal didactics for all fellows, with protected time free from clinical responsibilities. Faculty members deliver lectures covering topics such as solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, classical hematology, pharmacology, palliative care, and radiation therapy. Fellows are also expected to present in journal clubs and case discussions.
Tumor Board Participation: during subspecialty rotations, fellows are expected to attend corresponding tumor boards. These meetings offer invaluable opportunities to gain knowledge and experience in managing complex cases within a multidisciplinary framework. Fellows are also encouraged to present cases from their own clinics.
Monday Inpatient Hematology Care Meetings: fellows participate in weekly care meetings at Banner Gateway Medical Center, where the inpatient team and outpatient attending physicians review the management of all hospitalized hematology patients. Fellows present the patients under their care and benefit from faculty insights and strategies for addressing complex cases.
Monday SCTCT Inpatient Care Meetings: these multidisciplinary meetings involve attending physicians, hospitalists, advanced practice providers, nurses, and pharmacists. Fellows have the opportunity to participate in care discussions for hospitalized stem cell and cell therapy patients. While on rotation, fellows are expected to lead discussions and actively contribute to care planning.
Access to Houston MD Anderson Educational Resources: through our partnership with Houston MD Anderson Cancer Center, fellows will have access to additional educational opportunities. These include participation in subspecialty integration retreats, which offer networking, tumor board/case discussions, and multidisciplinary care panels led by MD Anderson faculty. Fellows will also have online access to grand rounds and other lecture materials.
