Major Goals

Understand the role of palliative care in complex illness with emphasis on patient-centered decision making, coordination of care, inclusion of family, symptom control and quality of life, participate as a member of the interdisciplinary team (IDT), as well as refine communication skills.


Tuesday mornings at 8:00 a.m. are dedicated to mandatory formal, educational sessions. Each didactic sessions begins with a Grand Rounds webcast from the Mayo Clinic, which are followed by didactic sessions or Journal Club (monthly) and interdisciplinary rounds. Fellows will be required to present topics and to present twice at Mayo’s Grand Rounds sessions.

Clinical Experience

Rotations are held at the Phoenix VA Medical Center (PVAMC), Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix (BUMCP), Hospice of the Valley and Phoenix Children’s Hospital. We are also looking to add Banner Boswell as a rotation site. Rotations include: research, inpatient palliative care consultation at BUMCP and Boswell, pediatric inpatient palliative care consult service, outpatient palliative care rotation at PVAHCS, Long-term care (community living center rotation) and home and inpatient hospice care.

Sample Schedule

  • Research – 1 month.
  • Long-term Care – 1 month.
  • VA Inpatient – 3 months.
  • Banner inpatient – 2 months.
  • Hospice – 2 months.
  • Pediatrics – 1 month.
  • Electives – 2 months.
