Program Overview

Welcome! The MD/PhD program at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix is designed to train students planning careers in academic medicine and biomedical research. Through the collaborative efforts of the College of Medicine and the Graduate College at the University of Arizona, research-intensive training is pursued through the Clinical Translational Sciences PhD program.

The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix defines general goals and requirements for the MD program and the Graduate College defines the same for the Clinical Translational Science doctoral program. The overarching goal of the MD/PhD program is to provide dual training in medicine and research to talented individuals interested in careers as physician-scientists working in the public and private sectors. This program is designed with the goal of providing a seamless navigation through the medical and graduate curriculum. The overall aim is to ensure:

  • A deep knowledge of medicine and Clinical Translational Sciences
  • A sufficient depth of knowledge in the student's area of specialty (medical and research)
  • A sufficient breadth of knowledge in the student's minor subject
  • Rigorous medical school and research training
  • Professional development training (writing, speaking, critical evaluation of literature, grant crafting)
  • Training in teaching skills

A Minor Program of Study is also required in a discipline that is relevant to your long-term scholarly goals.
