We welcome third- and fourth-year dental students—or second- and third-year students enrolled in a three-year dental program—who are strongly considering a career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and intend to apply to an OMFS residency program.

Our externship provides a focused, short-term experience designed to offer meaningful exposure to the clinical and educational environment of an OMFS residency. Due to high interest, availability is limited, and early application is strongly encouraged.  This is strictly an observership.  Meaning no hands-on patients.  We do not require malpractice insurance either.

Application Requirements

Applicants must be either a dental student in their Third or Fourth year (Second or Third year for Three-year programs) from a CODA accredited U.S. Dental School or a dental graduate from a CODA accredited U.S. Dental School.

Required Materials

Applicants must submit the following materials:

  • 2×2 photograph
  • Copy of driver’s license
  • Documentation of current influenza vaccination and tuberculosis (TB) testing
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Letter from the Dean’s Office at your home dental school confirming that you are in good academic standing (If graduated from dental school, a copy of your diploma)
  • Letter of recommendation from an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery faculty member or an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who you have shadowed
  • Personal statement outlining your interest in OMFS and your reasons for pursuing an externship at our program

We encourage applicants to include alternative dates, as scheduling is subject to availability.

Additional Information

Externship positions fill quickly, particularly during the summer months and holiday breaks. We are closed the full month of June due to on and off boarding.  We strongly recommend submitting your application several months in advance to maximize your chances of securing a rotation.

Due to the competitive nature of the externship, priority consideration may be given to students who plan to apply to OMFS residency programs in the upcoming application cycle.
