The program was a success, and in 2004, the Arizona Medical Education Consortium (AzMEC) was asked to participate.<\/p>\n\n The concept of Academic Excellence Day was developed and approved by all of the Phoenix-area members (all allopathic programs in Maricopa County) and the first city-wide Academic Excellence Day was held in 2005 at Mayo Clinic under the direction of AzMEC President, Michael D. Grossman, MD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n The program was held annually on the first Wednesday in May and rotated at the participatory hospitals until the University of Arizona College of Medicine \u2013 Phoenix formally opened. Each of the participatory hospitals paid a fee to participate based on the number of residents the hospital had and continued that way until 2015 when the MICA Medical Foundation began providing funding each year. In 2020, the format went virtual in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to allow people to participate and judge in the safety of their own space. After two years of a virtual format, 2023 will again be offering a hybrid format of virtual posters and an in-person oral presentation event.<\/p>\n\n The mission of Academic Excellence Day is to promote an environment of academic excellence amongst trainees in our participating institutions. Academic Excellence Day will provide an opportunity for residents and fellows in training programs in the greater Phoenix area to showcase the volume of bench and clinical research and quality improvement initiatives being performed.<\/p>\n\nThere will be an option to virtually join the oral presentation event through Zoom. The 3D Genome and Hypertension<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
Investigations of blood pressure (BP)-associated noncoding sequence variants using approaches such as precise genome editing and mapping the 3D genome in human arterioles and other BP-relevant tissues have elucidated long-range chromatin interactions and other regulatory mechanisms by which noncoding variants influence gene expression and BP. Studies of orthologous noncoding genomic regions in animal models corresponding to human genomic regions harboring BP-associated variants have demonstrated substantial effects on BP, suggesting that the phenotypic impact of noncoding sequence variants may be large within human subgroups. Continued expansion of functional studies of trait-associated noncoding sequence variants, together with advances in mapping molecular quantitative trait loci and epigenomic landscapes, will provide novel insights directly relevant to human biology and disease and essential for understanding humans as molecular systems.<\/p>\n\n

Eric N. Olson, PhD, is the founding Chair of Molecular Biology at UT Southwestern and Director of the Hamon Center for Regenerative Science & Medicine and the Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Clinical Research Center. He holds multiple distinguished chairs in molecular biology, stem cell research, and cardiac birth defects. <\/p>\n\n
Olson and his trainees discovered core transcription factors governing cardiac and skeletal muscle development and disease, reshaping cardiovascular and muscle biology and enabling therapeutic strategies. Recently, his laboratory pioneered a gene-editing approach that corrects most Duchenne muscular dystrophy mutations, demonstrating efficacy in human cells and animal models and advancing toward clinical translation. A cited scientist, Olson is a member of the National Academies, an investigator, a mentor, and a biotechnology founder committed to translating discovery into medicine. <\/p>\n\n
With more than 300 publications in high impact peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Olson's works have been cited more than 200,000 times, supporting an H-index 248.<\/p>\n\n

The Reality:<\/strong> Over 38 million Americans have diabetes, and another 98 million have prediabetes. But here's the good news\u2014lifestyle changes can significantly reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and you don't have to change everything overnight. \nIoannis Koutroulis, MD<\/strong>, an emergency medicine physician at Children's National Hospital and associate dean of MD admissions at George Washington University. He is originally from Greece, where he attended medical school and received a PhD in infectious diseases. He completed residency training in New York and a fellowship in Philadelphia at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and Drexel University College of Medicine. At that time, he also completed an MBA in healthcare management and finance.<\/p>\n\n
As the associate dean, Dr. Koutroulis provides overall leadership in medical student admissions and strategic direction and priorities for the admissions program. He also serves as the school\u2019s representative on inter-school initiatives and university and national committees related to medical school admissions.<\/p>\n\nDr. Koutroulis has published work on sepsis, atopic dermatitis, obesity and asthma. Dr. Koutroulis also spends a lot of his time teaching the next generation of physicians. He loves traveling all over the world and his favorite place is Santorini, Greece, where he enjoys the beautiful sunsets.

The program was a success, and in 2004, the Arizona Medical Education Consortium (AzMEC) was asked to participate.<\/p>\n\n
The concept of Academic Excellence Day was developed and approved by all of the Phoenix-area members (all allopathic programs in Maricopa County) and the first city-wide Academic Excellence Day was held in 2005 at Mayo Clinic under the direction of AzMEC President, Michael D. Grossman, MD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
The program was held annually on the first Wednesday in May and rotated at the participatory hospitals until the University of Arizona College of Medicine \u2013 Phoenix formally opened. Each of the participatory hospitals paid a fee to participate based on the number of residents the hospital had and continued that way until 2015 when the MICA Medical Foundation began providing funding each year. In 2020, the format went virtual in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to allow people to participate and judge in the safety of their own space. After two years of a virtual format, 2023 will again be offering a hybrid format of virtual posters and an in-person oral presentation event.<\/p>\n\n
The mission of Academic Excellence Day is to promote an environment of academic excellence amongst trainees in our participating institutions. Academic Excellence Day will provide an opportunity for residents and fellows in training programs in the greater Phoenix area to showcase the volume of bench and clinical research and quality improvement initiatives being performed.<\/p>\n\nThere will be an option to virtually join the oral presentation event through Zoom.
