- Building an Integrated Faculty Development Program Across the Curriculum
Dr. Kirsten Brown is the Associate Director for Teaching and Learning Resources and Career Development in the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (GWSMHS). She is an Associate Professor and the Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology.
Dr. Brown earned her doctorate in Functional Anatomy & Evolution from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2011 and has been a faculty member since 2011. Over the past 15 years, she has held major medical curricular leadership roles, including serving as course director for two integrated preclinical courses and overseeing vertical and horizontal integration of gross anatomy and neuroanatomy. Since 2022, she has worked in the GWSMHS CFE to support faculty teaching and career development. More recently, she has focused her efforts on developing programming around best practices for using artificial intelligence for faculty and students. She developed the peer-led monthly faculty development “Artificial Intelligence Technology Workshop Series," and a new clinical elective, “Artificial Intelligence Applications in Healthcare.”
Dr. Brown is a medical education researcher who collaborates and publishes on broad topics including anatomy education, standards of excellence for promotion and artificial intelligence. She is the past recipient of the SMHS Distinguished Teacher Award, four Golden Apple Teaching Awards and the 2020 GWU Morton A Bender Teaching Award. She is the second recipient of the endowed Frank N. Miller Distinguished Teaching Professorship (2021-2025). In addition to her excellence in teaching and scholarship, Dr. Brown has extensive leadership and recognition outside of GWSMHS. She is the 2026 Program Chair for the Northeast Group on Educational Affairs (NEGEA) meeting and serves on the American Association for Anatomy (AAA)’s Board of Directors.
