Commencement Profile: Jubran Jubran

On Monday, May 8, the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix will hold its 13th Commencement. Led by a pipe and drum corps, the Class of 2023 will process through downtown Phoenix, finishing at the Arizona Financial Theatre for their official ceremony. The day marks the beginning of the next phase in their journey as physicians. The college profiled a series of graduating students to commemorate the milestone.
Meet Jubran Jubran

His general interest in medicine came from seeing his older cousins, a few of whom are physicians, treat patients and positively impact their lives daily.
He credits his mother, his father, his twin sister, Wadeaa, and his cousin Jubran, one of his formative role models, as his biggest supporters.
Path Toward Medicine
What was the spark that led you to become a physician?
During my undergraduate program, I worked as a surgical assistant at a dermatologic surgery center. Experiencing first-hand the process of healing and guiding patients through a difficult time in their life and forming strong patient-physician relationships inspired me to pursue medicine as a career, as I had never felt that level of personal fulfillment from any other work endeavor before.
Match Day
On Match Day, what was it like discovering where you were headed for residency?
I can absolutely say that Match Day was one of the happiest days of my life! Finding out that I matched into neurosurgery the Monday prior definitely put me at ease going into Match Day but opening the envelope to find out I matched into my dream program on Friday put me in a state of equal parts shock and bliss.
What’s Next?
What excites you most about your upcoming residency? Where are you headed?
I am headed to the University of California San Diego for my residency in neurosurgery! I am ecstatic to go back to California, especially in a beautiful location with lots of family in the area, including my twin sister.
What I am most excited about is to finally start the residency I have been working toward since the first day of medical school and building the tools and skillset to treat patients with neurosurgical disease in a fantastic, supportive group of faculty and co-residents.
The College of Medicine – Phoenix Culture
Looking back, what’s your favorite medical school memory?

I am so grateful to have made relationships with friends and mentors that I know will last for the rest of my life. I am excited for all of us to begin the next chapter in our careers together.
