Brief Bio
Wahid Wassef, MD, MPH, is a professor of medicine and division chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix and Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix. Board-certified in gastroenterology, he also serves as medical director of Digestive Diseases and Endoscopy at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix. His clinical expertise centers on pancreatic disease, advanced endoscopy and improving quality of life for patients with chronic pancreatitis.
Dr. Wassef is a recognized leader in pancreatic disease education and research, having served as president of the Collaborative Association of Pancreatic Education and Research (CAPER). His research focuses on chronic pancreatitis, including the development of the PANcreatitis Quality of Life Instrument (PANQOLI) to assess patient outcomes. He also collaborates with the U of A College of Medicine – Phoenix’s Frederic Zenhausern, PhD, MBA, director of the Center for Applied NanoBioscience and Medicine, to explore the pancreatic microbiome.
Before joining the College of Medicine – Phoenix, Dr. Wassef was director of Advanced Endoscopy and Fellowship Training, medical director of the Pancreatic Disease Clinic, and associate chief quality officer for the Department of Medicine at UMass Memorial Health Care in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Dr. Wassef earned his medical degree from Boston University Medical Center and completed fellowships in gastroenterology and pancreatico-biliary diseases at Rhode Island Hospital, part of the Brown University School of Medicine. He also holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of Massachusetts.
