The Division of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix and Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix is dedicated to providing exceptional, age-friendly care to older adults across inpatient, ambulatory and post-acute settings. Recognized as a Center Committed to Care Excellence in Age-Friendly Health Systems by Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), our division is part of a national movement advancing high-quality care for aging populations.

Our inpatient services include a specialized Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit at Banner – University Phoenix, which collaborates closely with trauma surgery, orthopedics and hospital medicine to deliver coordinated, age-sensitive care. We prioritize early hospitalization and surgical intervention for conditions such as hip fractures to improve outcomes and recovery.

Banner – University Phoenix also houses Arizona’s first Geriatric Emergency Department, designed to enhance emergency care for older adults. This innovative program focuses on fall prevention, early diagnosis, and patient education to reduce complications and hospital readmissions.

In post-acute care, we work alongside Banner Select Rehabilitation Hospital to provide comprehensive rehabilitation for patients recovering from strokes, spinal cord injuries and trauma.

Our ambulatory care programs emphasize values-based, goal-oriented care across the lifespan. Faculty members provide geriatric and dementia care in assisted living facilities throughout the Sun Cities area, ensuring continuity and compassion in community-based settings.

At the Phoenix VA Health Care System, our faculty specializes in skilled nursing homes, hospice, and long-term care, addressing the complex needs of veterans with dignity and expertise.

Our consultation services support multiple specialties by offering guidance in palliative care, prognostication, complex decision-making, pain management, and supportive care — ensuring that every patient receives holistic, person-centered treatment.
