The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix GME Programs developed program-level milestones, similar to specialty and subspecialty milestones, to provide program leaders with a common set of expectations. These milestones clearly articulate minimum standards while also setting stretch goals. Programs use them for self-assessment, guiding institutional improvements and program performance.

The current GME Program Milestones offer a framework for evaluating programs in areas that pose ongoing challenges in GME. They help create a shared understanding and provide integrated tools to support continuous improvement. The team of GME leaders who developed these milestones continue to consider revisions, similar to specialty milestones. We anticipate that they will evolve over time as achieving high standards across all programs becomes routine.

Program Milestone assessment is part of the Annual Program Evaluation (APE) process, and program SMART goals often align with these GME program competencies. Program leaders are encouraged to use institutional and national tools, as well as the implementation ideas provided on the resource page for each competency, to support their improvement efforts.
