Non-Call Months

During non-call months, residents generally have weekends off. They have occasional assignments of “back up” call during these times, so that if a colleague on a call service needs to be out for a family event, interview, illness or other reason, there is a system for coverage. This is monitored for proper use.

Most weekdays are 6:00am – 5:00pm. New patients are accepted nearly every day, depending on team capacity.
Each team does  approximately one week per month of night float (5:00pm – 7:00am). 
When one member of the team is off, the other team members cover. 

BUMCP Wards:

Co-Management Team

1 GI fellow

Joint teaching rounds with IM and Hepatology daily. 
Most weekdays are 6:00am – 5:00pm.
No nights.
New patients are accepted nearly every day, depending on team capacity.
When one member of the team is off, the other team members cover.

VA Wards

Most weekdays are 6:00am – 5:00pm.  
New patients are accepted every day, with a rotating schedule of short/long call teams and a “post-call” team (day after long call).
No nights (there is a dedicated night float team, see below).

VA Night Float

One senior and 2 of the interns are on each night from 5:00pm – 6:00am (the other senior and the 3rd intern are off). 
2 Attendings in-house. 
There are no clinics or academic half day this month.

VA ICU

Every 5 days, one resident moves to cover nights (5:00pm – 6:00am) for a block of 5 nights. 
Attending/fellow and night tele ICU attending are readily available at night.
The remaining 3 residents cover day shifts with the in-house attending and fellow. 
New patients are accepted nearly every day.

Every 5 days, one senior resident moves to cover nights (5:00pm – 6:00am) for a block of 5 nights. 
Interns do not cover nights.   Attending or fellow in house 24/7.
The remaining 4 teams are divided into 2 day teams (each day team is comprised of 2 seniors + 2 interns + attending + fellow). 
New patients are accepted nearly every day.
