Silent strokes often don't come with symptoms (hence the name). And those symptoms that do present themselves can be so faint, people chalk them up to stress or fatigue. Cognitive issues such as memory lapses or a lack of focus may indicate the presence of lesions, a significant indicator of silent strokes. "The presence of lesions tells me we need to step up and take better care of your health and be aware of the risk factors," said Andrei Alexandrov, MD, a professor and chair of Neurology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix.
