\nIoannis Koutroulis, MD<\/strong>, an emergency medicine physician at Children's National Hospital and associate dean of MD admissions at George Washington University. He is originally from Greece, where he attended medical school and received a PhD in infectious diseases. He completed residency training in New York and a fellowship in Philadelphia at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and Drexel University College of Medicine. At that time, he also completed an MBA in healthcare management and finance.<\/p>\n\n
As the associate dean, Dr. Koutroulis provides overall leadership in medical student admissions and strategic direction and priorities for the admissions program. He also serves as the school\u2019s representative on inter-school initiatives and university and national committees related to medical school admissions.<\/p>\n\n
Dr. Koutroulis has published work on sepsis, atopic dermatitis, obesity and asthma. Dr. Koutroulis also spends a lot of his time teaching the next generation of physicians. He loves traveling all over the world and his favorite place is Santorini, Greece, where he enjoys the beautiful sunsets.

Elise Everett, MD<\/strong><\/a> is a gynecologic oncologist at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She also serves as associate professor and director of clinical clerkships at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont.<\/p>\n\n
Her clinical interests include cervical cancer, early detection for ovarian cancer, endocervical cancer, gynecologic cancer, neoadjuvant chemotherapy for gynecologic malignancies, ovarian cancer, robotic surgery, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer and vulval cancer. Her research interests are focused on improving early detection of cervical cancer, reducing inappropriate cervical cancer screening and identifying effective tools to promote adherence to guidelines. Her publications on these topics and others can be found here.<\/p>\n\n
Dr. Everett chose a career in gynecologic oncology because it is the only cancer subspecialty that allows for full comprehensive care of the patient: she is able to offer her patients surgical treatment, chemotherapy and palliative \/ end of life care. This allows her to build long-term relationships with her patients and their families, and to develop deep levels of trust, empathy and compassion. It is these relationships that fuel her passion for medicine.

Dr. Cole's research involves the chemical biology of protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) in the context of signaling, epigenetics, and cancer. His lab develops and applies chemical approaches including protein semi synthesis and small molecule probes to the study of protein phosphorylation, acetylation, ubiquitination, and other PTMs in enzymes and cellular networks.

\nIn this seminar, Dr. Cole will discuss his group\u2019s research on the PI3-kinase\/Akt signaling pathway. In particular, he will speak about how the critical protein kinase Akt is regulated by C-terminal phosphorylation. He will also describe insights into how Akt is targeted by the key kinase complex mTORC2. Dr. Cole will also summarize recent work about the catalytic mechanisms of NEDD4-family ubiquitin E3 ligases which can regulate the lipid phosphatase PTEN.<\/p>\n\n

Overview<\/h2>\n\n
Academic Excellence Day began in 1999 when Maricopa Medical Center (now Valleywise Health) and Mayo Clinic Scottsdale Departments of Academic Affairs developed a program to highlight resident training program research efforts. The program was a success, and in 2004, the Arizona Medical Education Consortium (AzMEC) was asked to participate.<\/p>\n\n
The concept of Academic Excellence Day was developed and approved by all of the Phoenix-area members (all allopathic programs in Maricopa County) and the first city-wide Academic Excellence Day was held in 2005 at Mayo Clinic under the direction of AzMEC President, Michael D. Grossman, MD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
The program was held annually on the first Wednesday in May and rotated at the participatory hospitals until the University of Arizona College of Medicine \u2013 Phoenix formally opened. Each of the participatory hospitals paid a fee to participate based on the number of residents the hospital had and continued that way until 2015 when the MICA Medical Foundation began providing funding each year. In 2020, the format went virtual in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to allow people to participate and judge in the safety of their own space. After two years of a virtual format, 2023 will again be offering a hybrid format of virtual posters and an in-person oral presentation event.<\/p>\n\n
The mission of Academic Excellence Day is to promote an environment of academic excellence amongst trainees in our participating institutions. Academic Excellence Day will provide an opportunity for residents and fellows in training programs in the greater Phoenix area to showcase the volume of bench and clinical research and quality improvement initiatives being performed.<\/p>\n\n

\nMove Arizona is a workplace movement initiative led by Life & Work Connections. The program spans eight weeks each spring. The goal? Encouraging University of Arizona employees to build the healthy habit of meeting those 150 minutes of movement.

This 20-minute general screening is available to benefits-eligible employees at no cost once per calendar year.

A fasting blood test.<\/li>\n\t
A hemoglobin A1C test.<\/li>\n\t
Height, weight, and waist circumference measurements.<\/li>\n\t
Blood pressure measurement.<\/li>\n\t
Osteoporosis and bone density screening.<\/li>\n\t
Prostate-Specific Antigen, or PSA, screening. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
You'll receive your results within 10 days of your appointment and are kept completely confidential.

We continue to welcome students from all walks of life and commemorate our unique campus cultures. On Wednesday, October 1, the University of Arizona College of Medicine \u2013 Phoenix's Office of Health Care Advancement<\/a><\/strong> will host a Blessing Ceremony to begin the academic year and celebrate all Phoenix Bioscience Core students of American Indian\/Alaskan Native\/Indigenous descent. <\/p>\n\n
All campus colleagues are welcome to attend this ceremony! The ceremony will be held in an area of the Grand Canyon \u2014 the outdoor area between the Health Sciences Education Building<\/a><\/strong> (HSEB) and the Biomedical Sciences Partnership Building<\/a><\/strong> (BSPB). During the program, attendees will be acknowledged by a traditional healer from the Gila River community and offered words of encouragement and a blessing as they embark upon, or continue, their educational journey. <\/p>\n\n
