Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix

This is a 746‑bed Level I trauma center and Joint Commission–certified Comprehensive Stroke Center.
Our neurology team evaluates and treats patients throughout the hospital, including the Emergency Department, neuro–intensive care unit, neurology inpatient units, and through consultations on any hospital floor.

We serve a highly diverse patient population: approximately half of our patients are white, 30% Hispanic, 6% African American, and 5% Asian. About 60% of our thrombectomy cases are transferred from hospitals across Arizona, while 40% present to our Emergency Department.

Our stroke program is recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association with their highest honor — Gold Plus Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus — for exceptional clinical outcomes.

Our stroke program begins in the Emergency Department and continues seamlessly through inpatient care and rehabilitation at the Banner – University Rehabilitation facility.

  • Administration of thrombolysis with TNK

  • Advanced neuroimaging for rapid intervention
  • Neurosurgical procedures

  • Assessment and coordination of rehabilitation and post‑discharge services.

Multidisciplinary Neurology Clinic

It is located in a separate building one block from the hospital and includes 18 exam rooms. Fellows will have half a day of continuity clinic a week staffed with a stroke attending.

Banner Rehabilitation Hospital Phoenix

This joint‑venture partnership between Banner Health and Select Medical is a 56‑bed, all‑private‑room medical rehabilitation hospital located in Phoenix, Arizona.

The hospital offers a dynamic and supportive rehabilitation environment, combining high‑quality care, expert interdisciplinary treatment, and a comprehensive range of specialized programs and services.

Fellows will complete a rotation at this facility during their rehabilitation block, where they will actively participate in and observe the full rehabilitation journey their patients experience—from early recovery to discharge planning and continuity of care.

Tele stroke

Our Tele Stroke program offers fellows a dynamic and high‑impact elective experience. We provide real‑time acute stroke consultations to multiple community and critical‑access hospitals across the Valley—expanding expert stroke care to patients who might otherwise lack immediate access.

As part of this elective, fellows can participate directly in rapid phone‑based stroke evaluations, gaining exposure to diverse clinical presentations and sharpening their decision‑making skills in time‑sensitive scenarios. Each consultation is fully supervised by an attending stroke specialist, ensuring robust teaching, support, and high‑quality patient care.

This elective not only strengthens clinical expertise in acute stroke management but also offers fellows a unique opportunity to make a meaningful regional impact—extending advanced stroke care beyond the walls of the tertiary medical center.
