While it is normal for a cough to last for a couple of weeks because of ailments such as bronchitis or the flu, a chronic cough could indicate a serious lung problem. Experts say the most urgent sign of a serious health condition would be noticing blood when you cough. "The most common pulmonary reason for this symptom is bronchitis due to infection. However, the most life-threatening reason for coughing up blood (hemoptysis) is lung cancer. And this can also be seen in pulmonary embolism," said Ken Knox, MD, a pulmonary medicine specialist, associate dean of Faculty Affairs and Career Development and interim chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix.
