Circadian Control of Histone Turnover During Cardiac Development and Growth<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
The molecular clock operates at the cell and organ level, underpinned by a subcellular network of transcriptional and protein circuits. Circadian rhythms participate in heart disease: altered circadian biology is associated with cardiac arrythmias, myocardial infarction, hypertension, and diabetes. Clock and Bmal1 are basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors that promote transcription of a set of \u201cclock-controlled\u201d genes, including Cryptochrome and Period. In addition to transcriptional cycling, many intermediate steps controlling protein abundance have been shown to oscillate, including splicing, mRNA degradation, translation, protein degradation, and, more recently, nucleosome deposition on chromatin. Our recent work supports the notion that \u03b1-adrenergic signaling, a critical driver of cardiac growth and contractility, is an initiating stimulus of histone turnover-dependent transcriptional remodeling of clock-controlled genes critical to myocyte hypertrophy. In our ongoing work, we seek to understand whether and how the circadian clock orchestrates early neonatal myocyte maturation, including the transition from hyperplastic to hypertrophic growth and exit from the cell cycle, by remodeling chromatin.<\/p>\n\n

Overview<\/h2>\n\n
Academic Excellence Day began in 1999 when Maricopa Medical Center (now Valleywise Health) and Mayo Clinic Scottsdale Departments of Academic Affairs developed a program to highlight resident training program research efforts. The program was a success, and in 2004, the Arizona Medical Education Consortium (AzMEC) was asked to participate.<\/p>\n\n
The concept of Academic Excellence Day was developed and approved by all of the Phoenix-area members (all allopathic programs in Maricopa County) and the first city-wide Academic Excellence Day was held in 2005 at Mayo Clinic under the direction of AzMEC President, Michael D. Grossman, MD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
The program was held annually on the first Wednesday in May and rotated at the participatory hospitals until the University of Arizona College of Medicine \u2013 Phoenix formally opened. Each of the participatory hospitals paid a fee to participate based on the number of residents the hospital had and continued that way until 2015 when the MICA Medical Foundation began providing funding each year. In 2020, the format went virtual in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to allow people to participate and judge in the safety of their own space. After two years of a virtual format, 2023 will again be offering a hybrid format of virtual posters and an in-person oral presentation event.<\/p>\n\n
The mission of Academic Excellence Day is to promote an environment of academic excellence amongst trainees in our participating institutions. Academic Excellence Day will provide an opportunity for residents and fellows in training programs in the greater Phoenix area to showcase the volume of bench and clinical research and quality improvement initiatives being performed.<\/p>\n\n
There will be an option to virtually join the oral presentation event through Zoom. A link will be made available and sent to those who RSVP as the event date nears.

Commencement<\/a><\/strong> marks a student's transition from the classroom to practicing medicine. It is the end of the students' medical school journey that has taken them four years to complete, and it is the culmination of all they have worked so hard for.<\/p>\n\n
This year's ceremony will be held at Orpheum Theatre \u2013 Phoenix <\/strong>\u2014 203 W. Adams St., Phoenix, AZ 85003<\/p>\n\n
Faculty and staff are invited to join the live stream on the college\u2019s YouTube channel<\/a><\/strong>.

\nThe cherished tradition of the procession led by bagpipe and drum corps will lead the Class of 2025 into their ceremony! Due to space constraints, we are limiting the faculty, staff and students able to attend in-person. Students who are not participating in the match, as well as faculty and staff, are encouraged to show their support by joining the livestream on the college's YouTube page<\/a><\/strong>. You do not need to have a YouTube account or login to join the celebration.<\/p>\n\n

Match Day is the culmination of a complex year-long process that matches the nation\u2019s graduating medical students with residency programs.
