AI Alone Won't Cut It: Toward Multimodal Collaborations in Medicine<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
Details<\/h4>\n\n
Medical AI mostly runs on single data streams: while no radiologist reads an image without a history, our models do it every day. Across several medical prediction tasks, I will illustrate how unimodal models can produce confident predictions on cases where the deciding evidence sits in data the model never saw. The obvious fix, fusing modalities, often loses to strong unimodal baselines, undone by the missingness, misalignment, and uneven quality that define real clinical data.<\/p>\n\n
Navigating those pitfalls takes expertise no single team holds, because every modality may involve a different specialty, and a model built inside one discipline inherits its blind spots. I will close with what our results suggest actually works, technically and organizationally, and with the claim at the heart of this talk: the future of medical AI depends less on architecture than on teams as multimodal as the data.<\/p>\n\n

Post-transcriptional Regulation of the Cardiac Proteome<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
Alternative splicing (AS) presents a major source of proteoform diversity. However, whereas transcriptomics studies have cataloged extensive isoform variations, their translation into functional proteoforms and regulatory states, in particular regulation under stress and disease conditions, remains poorly defined at the protein level. Many splicing events alter intrinsically disordered and regulatory regions, suggesting that AS may shape proteoform-specific responses to stress and influence protein organization within the cell. In this seminar, we will report on a strategy to extend beyond the limitations of trypsin-based bottom-up proteomics, where splice junction peptides are often poorly captured, integrating a middle-down proteomics approach to improve detection of alternative proteoforms and resolve combinatorial post-translational modifications. This approach greatly expands the detection of alternative protein isoforms and reveals coordinated regulation of isoform expression and post-translational modifications under stress conditions. The findings support a model where alternative splicing is dynamically regulated by proteoform-level modifications and compartment-specific factors, revealing mechanisms that potentially shape splicing outcomes across cellular environments.<\/p>\n\n

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing biomedical research and medical practice. AI has great potential to improve and accelerate research discovery as well as medical treatments and diagnostics and to truly usher the era of personalized discovery and personalized medicine. It is important to understand where AI stands now, how it may be able to help answer grand challenges in biomedicine, as well as its limitations and the potential dangers of misusing AI. <\/p>\n\n
The 9^{th<\/sup> Annual reimagine Health Research Symposium at the U of A College of Medicine - Phoenix is a daylong event that will feature world renowned clinical and scientific researchers who are on the cutting edge of using AI for discovery, therapeutics, and diagnostics. \nIoannis Koutroulis, MD<\/strong>, an emergency medicine physician at Children's National Hospital and associate dean of MD admissions at George Washington University. He is originally from Greece, where he attended medical school and received a PhD in infectious diseases. He completed residency training in New York and a fellowship in Philadelphia at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and Drexel University College of Medicine. At that time, he also completed an MBA in healthcare management and finance.<\/p>\n\n
As the associate dean, Dr. Koutroulis provides overall leadership in medical student admissions and strategic direction and priorities for the admissions program. He also serves as the school\u2019s representative on inter-school initiatives and university and national committees related to medical school admissions.<\/p>\n\n
Dr. Koutroulis has published work on sepsis, atopic dermatitis, obesity and asthma. Dr. Koutroulis also spends a lot of his time teaching the next generation of physicians. He loves traveling all over the world and his favorite place is Santorini, Greece, where he enjoys the beautiful sunsets.

Overview<\/h2>\n\n
Academic Excellence Day began in 1999 when Maricopa Medical Center (now Valleywise Health) and Mayo Clinic Scottsdale Departments of Academic Affairs developed a program to highlight resident training program research efforts. The program was a success, and in 2004, the Arizona Medical Education Consortium (AzMEC) was asked to participate.<\/p>\n\n
The concept of Academic Excellence Day was developed and approved by all of the Phoenix-area members (all allopathic programs in Maricopa County) and the first city-wide Academic Excellence Day was held in 2005 at Mayo Clinic under the direction of AzMEC President, Michael D. Grossman, MD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
The program was held annually on the first Wednesday in May and rotated at the participatory hospitals until the University of Arizona College of Medicine \u2013 Phoenix formally opened. Each of the participatory hospitals paid a fee to participate based on the number of residents the hospital had and continued that way until 2015 when the MICA Medical Foundation began providing funding each year. In 2020, the format went virtual in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to allow people to participate and judge in the safety of their own space. After two years of a virtual format, 2023 will again be offering a hybrid format of virtual posters and an in-person oral presentation event.<\/p>\n\n
The mission of Academic Excellence Day is to promote an environment of academic excellence amongst trainees in our participating institutions. Academic Excellence Day will provide an opportunity for residents and fellows in training programs in the greater Phoenix area to showcase the volume of bench and clinical research and quality improvement initiatives being performed.<\/p>\n\n
There will be an option to virtually join the oral presentation event through Zoom. A link will be made available and sent to those who RSVP as the event date nears.
