Peter Tontonoz is the Frances and Albert Piansky Endowed Chair and Distinguished Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and of Biological Chemistry at UCLA. Dr. Tontonoz received his B.A. from Wesleyan University and his MD. and PhD from Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Tontonoz’s laboratory endeavors to understand regulatory pathways that govern cholesterol, fatty acid and phospholipid metabolism. His work has helped to reveal fundamental mechanisms by which animals maintain cellular and whole-body lipid homeostasis. His group has elucidated pathways for the control of lipid uptake, transport and efflux, and has shown how these pathways impact the function of immune cells and metabolic tissues in both physiology and disease.

He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine and has received numerous awards, including the Stanley J. Korsmeyer Award (ASCI), the American Heart Association Basic Science Prize and the J.C. Fruchart Award (International Atherosclerosis Society). He serves on the editorial boards of PNAS, Genes & Development, and Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Seminar Title

  • New Pathways in Lipid Transport

Learning Objectives

  1. To understand functions for cholesterol metabolism in physiology
  2. To become familiar with mechanisms whereby cholesterol moves within cells
  3. To recognize how altered cholesterol metabolism may contribute to disease

This seminar series is offered in a hybrid format and can be attended in person at the BSPB, E115 Classroom, or virtually via Zoom. For any questions, please contact Cyndi at @email. Please visit our Metabolism in the Southwest Seminar page to view upcoming events in the series.
