Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Recognizes Impact of the Podcast on Family Medicine Education

The American Family Physician Podcast, produced by family medicine residents at the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix, won an innovation award from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. The award recognizes innovative programs that have had a significant, positive impact on family medicine education.

Innovation Award for the American Family Physician Podcast“It is a huge honor to win this award,” said Steven R. Brown, MD, program director for the Family Medicine Residency program and clinical associate professor for the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the UA College of Medicine – Phoenix. “The podcast is an example of how collaborations in the family medicine community can lead to great things. Our podcast team at the University of Arizona – Phoenix is so grateful for the support of American Family Physician, and we are so grateful to the family medicine physicians, residents and medical students who listen.”

This is not the first honor for the podcast. The group won a 2017 Gold Excel Award from the Association of Media and Publishing in the educational podcast category. The podcast has been described as a showpiece for the family medicine specialty and represents the best qualities of family medicine: excellence, accessibility and joy in work.

The podcast promotes evidence-based learning and informs listeners about the specialty of family medicine. It began as a resident initiative and has featured a total of 12 third-year residents through three seasons.

Recently, the podcast surpassed 1 million downloads.
