With rising temperatures and heat-related deaths in Maricopa County exceeding 400 for the last three years, now — more than ever — we must find ways to "Beat the Heat." Consequently, the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix created this digital series to showcase all the cutting-edge research, technologies and techniques that our institution is spearheading to help people stay safe.
In this "Clips" episode, we interviewed Jeffery Stowell, MD, interim chair of Emergency Medicine at the college, about the effects of heat on the body and how overexposure can lead to severe health consequences. In addition, he shared the innovative, Cold Water Immersion protocol his team at Valleywise Health uses to rapidly cool patients in a severly heat-impacted region.
