Brief Bio

Anne-Michelle Ruha, MD, is a professor of Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine and serves as the division chief of Medical Toxicology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. She serves as chair of the Department of Medical Toxicology at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix and is the medical director for Banner Pharmacy Services. Dr. Ruha has been actively involved in medical education for more than 25 years and is passionate about expanding medical toxicology education and expertise to learners at all levels through clinical teaching, scholarly publications and presentations, and national and international advocacy.

Dr. Ruha is board certified in emergency medicine, medical toxicology, and addiction medicine. Her clinical practice focuses on the management of patients experiencing adverse effects from drugs, toxins, and venoms. In the outpatient setting, she provides consultations for patients with concerns about environmental exposures and poisonings, adverse effects of medications, or genetic polymorphisms that may affect medication pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.

Dr. Ruha’s primary research interest centers on snake envenomation and antivenom therapy. She co-developed the American College of Medical Toxicology’s Toxicology Investigator Consortium (ToxIC) North American Snakebite Registry and served as its principal investigator for 12 years. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed medical literature and authored medical textbook chapters and online resources on snake, scorpion, and spider envenomations.

In her role as medical director for Banner Pharmacy Services, she combines her toxicology expertise and passion for medication safety to help improve patient safety across the health care system.
