The Division of Medical Toxicology offers specialized training in the care of patients across a broad range of clinical presentations and settings. Medical Toxicology is recognized as a subspecialty by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) with pathways through Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, and Pediatric residencies. Sponsoring boards include the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), the American Board of Preventive Medicine, and the American Board of Pediatrics. Faculty in the division support learners through clinical and didactic experiences that emphasize evidence-based, interdisciplinary, and hands-on care. The division is committed to preparing the next generation of leaders in medical toxicology.
Graduate Medical Education programs in the Division of Medical Toxicology:
Medical Toxicology Fellowship – This 24-month ACGME-accredited program offers comprehensive training in the evaluation and management of toxicologic conditions in both adult and pediatric patients. Fellows gain experience across a variety of clinical sites, including Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix and Phoenix Children’s Hospital, and manage a high-volume inpatient admitting and consulting service, primarily in the ICU setting. In addition, our institution supports the Banner Poison and Drug Information Center, which serves Maricopa County, and provides our learners ample opportunities to participate in the care of patients from all parts of our community. The fellowship program includes a strong didactic curriculum and opportunities for teaching and scholarly activity. Up to three fellowship positions are available each year.
Residency Training – The Division of Medical Toxicology provides clinical training for residents through toxicology electives and inpatient rotations. Residents gain exposure to a wide range of toxicologic conditions, including overdose management, substance use disorders, withdrawal syndromes, venomous bites and stings, and environmental exposures. Training emphasizes interdisciplinary care and bedside management, with experiences available at multiple sites, including Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix and Phoenix Children’s Hospital.
