New Program
After years of conceptual development, we offer a new program that is focused on training the most qualified, skilled, and caring residents. We offer individualized attention to our residents in a collaborative environment with highly engaged and skilled faculty, who were each chosen for their clinical and teaching expertise. While our clinical services are rich in pathology, volume and diversity, it is important to point out that our neurology services function efficiently without the support of house-staff, allowing us to emphasize teaching and scholarship. In the past 3 years, we have expanded our residency size by 25% and intend on further increasing this within the next year.
Institute Model and System Integration
Banner University Medical Center – Phoenix is an academic medical center with a clinical model developed around multidisciplinary Institutes. The Neuroscience Institute is home to multiple specialty centers, including Epilepsy, Neurovascular, Headache, Sleep, Multiple Sclerosis and Movement Disorders. As the central hospital in a large referral network, residents will be able to participate in the creation of clinical care pathways, systems-of-care development and will develop a nuanced understanding of the complexity of integration of care in a large hospital system. This includes opportunities for process-improvement, clinical practice guideline development and community and regional outreach.
Faculty Support
The ratio of faculty to residents is 1.5:1, which allows for both focused and diverse mentoring.
Research
Residents are expected to formulate at least one research hypothesis and project during their residency. Clinical trial design, basic biostatistics and clinical epidemiology are part of the general didactic curriculum. Each of our faculty have ongoing clinical trials and are engaged in scholarship. The UA College of Medicine – Phoenix and Banner provide clinical research support in the form of study coordinators, IRB oversight, statistical, grant writing and contracting assistance. The Phoenix VA has a separate research department with over 100 ongoing IRB approved studies.
Program Benefits
Residents will be funded to attend one national conference during the residency. Additional funding will be provided for residents who have abstracts or presentations accepted at the conference. Additionally, residents will have an annual educational fund that allows purchases of educational materials, such as books or online resources.
Every resident is provided a neuroanatomy book, as well as online neuroanatomy modules.
