Steven M. Erickson, MD FACP

Brief Bio

Dr. Steven M. Erickson is the director of the Division of Sports Medicine/Concussion at the College of Medicine – Phoenix; medical director for Banner Sports Medicine and Concussion Specialists; primary care chief of the Banner – UMC Phoenix Sports Medicine Center; and program director for the College of Medicine – Phoenix's Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. He currently serves as a team physician for the Phoenix Suns. He was previously the head team physician at Arizona State University (ASU) and has served as the program director of the ASU Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship for more than the last decade.

A native of Tucson, he completed his undergraduate and medical school education at the University of Arizona. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency in Phoenix at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. After his residency, he spent 18 months in the Sports Medicine Fellowship at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, IN.

He returned to Phoenix to work as part-time faculty at ASU and assistant team physician for the Arizona Diamondbacks. In the Fall of 2000, he was promoted to serve as the head team physician at ASU, and in July 2003, he founded the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. Since 2001, he has served as a medical consultant for the Major League Baseball umpire department.

Dr. Erickson is one of the members of the Major League Baseball Medical Advisory Committee and the Major League Baseball Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Committee. He also serves on the Arizona Interscholastic Association Medical Advisory Committee. He is one of the original certified ImPACT consultants credentialed to interpret and manage patients using ImPACT computerized neurocognitive testing.

In addition to his teaching and patient care responsibilities, Dr. Erickson co-authored the chapter on "Martial Arts Injuries" in the 1st Edition of Netter's Sports Medicine.
