Nutrition Over 50

Wednesday, September 16, 2026 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM

Eating well after 50 isn't about dieting — it's about understanding what your body needs now. This workshop covers how aging affects appetite, metabolism, and nutritional needs; key nutrients to prioritize; and what current research says about weight and physical activity. Includes practical guidance for family caregivers managing their own nutrition alongside caregiving responsibilities.

The Reality: Nutritional needs change meaningfully with age, affecting energy, muscle mass, immune function, and the risk of chronic disease, but most of us are still working from guidelines that don't account for these shifts.

The Challenge: Finding reliable, practical guidance that applies to where you actually are. Most nutrition information targets younger adults or focuses on weight loss rather than healthy aging.

What You'll Gain:

  • A clear picture of how aging affects your dietary needs, appetite, and key nutrients
  • Evidence-based guidance on weight, BMI, and physical activity after 50
  • Strategies for sustaining your own nutrition when caregiving is pulling your attention elsewhere

This session is practical and grounded in current research. Whether you're focused on your own health or trying to support someone else's, you'll leave with tools you can actually use.

Open to all U of A employees and family members. Especially relevant for adults 50+ and those in caregiving roles.
