Alternative Splicing of MYBPC3 in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common genetic heart disorder frequently associated with mutations in the MYBPC3 gene, which encodes cardiac myosin-binding protein C (cMyBP-C). Alternative splicing of MYBPC3 can produce multiple isoforms, aKecting cMyBP-C\u2019s structural and functional properties in cardiomyocytes and contributing to HCM. Aberrant splicing events may exacerbate HCM phenotypes by altering protein stability, phosphorylation, and sarcomeric integration, thereby driving maladaptive myocardial hypertrophy. Ongoing studies with Dr. Sadayappan investigate the role of MYBPC3 alternative splicing in HCM pathogenesis, underscoring the therapeutic potential of modulating splicing mechanisms to restore normal cMyBP-C function and improve cardiac outcomes in HCM patients.

\nIn this seminar, Dr. Zhang will cover the role of hepatic activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) in regulating lipid and lipoprotein metabolism, atherosclerosis, and fatty liver disease. He will also elaborate on the role of adipocyte ATF3 in protection against fatty liver disease. <\/p>\n\n

There is a misconception that eating disorders afflict only affluent teenage white girls. However, we know today that anyone, regardless of age, income level, race, or ethnicity, can be struggling with this disease. According to The American Academy of Pediatrics, the mean age of a child with an eating disorder is 12.5 years old. The reasons and treatments needed are diverse, but the first and most important step is to identify if your child is affected. Cindy Davis, MPH, RDN will share strategies to help parents and guardians identify the possible signs and behaviors of this problem. Overview<\/h2>\n\n
Academic Excellence Day began in 1999 when Maricopa Medical Center (now Valleywise Health) and Mayo Clinic Scottsdale Departments of Academic Affairs developed a program to highlight resident training program research efforts. The program was a success, and in 2004, the Arizona Medical Education Consortium (AzMEC) was asked to participate.<\/p>\n\n
The concept of Academic Excellence Day was developed and approved by all of the Phoenix-area members (all allopathic programs in Maricopa County) and the first city-wide Academic Excellence Day was held in 2005 at Mayo Clinic under the direction of AzMEC President, Michael D. Grossman, MD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
The program was held annually on the first Wednesday in May and rotated at the participatory hospitals until the University of Arizona College of Medicine \u2013 Phoenix formally opened. Each of the participatory hospitals paid a fee to participate based on the number of residents the hospital had and continued that way until 2015 when the MICA Medical Foundation began providing funding each year. In 2020, the format went virtual in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to allow people to participate and judge in the safety of their own space. After two years of a virtual format, 2023 will again be offering a hybrid format of virtual posters and an in-person oral presentation event.<\/p>\n\n
The mission of Academic Excellence Day is to promote an environment of academic excellence amongst trainees in our participating institutions. Academic Excellence Day will provide an opportunity for residents and fellows in training programs in the greater Phoenix area to showcase the volume of bench and clinical research and quality improvement initiatives being performed.<\/p>\n\n
There will be an option to virtually join the oral presentation event through Zoom. A link will be made available and sent to those who RSVP as the event date nears.

Dr. Kristina H. Petersen is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at New York Medical College. Her scholarly work primarily focuses on inclusive instruction, course accessibility, and creating curriculum to teach clinicians about persons with disabilities. In 2022, she received an award for Excellence in Scholarly Work from the Coalition for Disability Access in Health Science Education and the AAMC\/Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J.
