Director’s Welcome

Welcome to the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix/Banner Desert Internal Medicine residency! We were thrilled to welcome our inaugural class of 20 residents in June 2025 and we’re excited to grow our residency community in the coming years ahead. This program marks an important expansion of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix Graduate Medical Education presence into the East Valley – a region in need of dedicated physicians – as part of our commitment to addressing physician shortages across Arizona.

Our program grounded in innovative, interdisciplinary training that integrates evidence-based medicine, emerging technologies, and immersive clinical experience. We are building a collaborative, learner-centered environment that emphasizes professional growth, resident well-being, and compassionate, patient-centered care. Residency is a time of intense responsibility and transformation – but also of incredible purpose – and we are here to mentor and support you every step of the way.

We are deeply committed to the community we serve. Our curriculum is designed to help residents better understand the social and structural determinants of health and to develop the skills to advocate for equitable, high-quality care. The unique needs of our patients inspire us to train physicians who lead with empathy, respect, and a commitment to excellence.

Our goal is to fuse the academic strengths of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix with the clinical excellence of Banner Health to help you become not only a superb internist, but also a well-rounded, resilient, and forward-thinking physician-leader. Whether your aspirations lie in primary care, hospital medicine, subspecialty training, or advocacy and systems improvement, we are here to help you get there!

Join us in building something extraordinary in the Easy Valley and help share a new model for internal medicine training at the College of Medicine – Phoenix!

Warmly,
