Where is Payson and What is a Rural Training Program
Rural Training programs are set up in collaboration with a larger academic parent program. This model allows both the robust educational resources and volume of the urban academic medical center and the full-spectrum community-focused rural hospital and clinics. By the ACGME standards, a rural training program resident will spend more than 50% time at the rural site, and less than 50% of their time in the urban partner hospital sites.
Payson is a community that is at a higher elevation and to the North of Phoenix. The medical center has a large rural catchment area. The Emergency Department is busy and sends patients out by helicopter almost daily.
Payson Arizona is at 5000 feet. It has hiking and views along with all the grocery stores and shops. The drive to Payson takes about 90 minutes by car, through the picturesque Tonto National Forest.
