Brief Bio
Jesse Selber, MD, MPH, MHCM, FACS, is the chair of the Department of Surgery and director of Surgical Services at Banner Health in the Phoenix Market.
As a leader at the intersection of medical innovation, compassionate wellness and global service, he has set new standards in reconstructive care and inspiring hope beyond the hospital walls.
Prior to joining the college, Dr. Selber was the physician executive at Corewell Health, where he oversaw all employed surgeons. At Corewell, he also served as vice president of Strategy and Growth — evaluating new business opportunities, integrations and arrangements with independent physicians around general alignment, as well as capital projects and joint ventures, such as ambulatory surgery centers; Surgery Service Line chief; interim chair of Neurosurgery and professor of Plastic Surgery. In those roles, he led surgical excellence across the eight hospitals, 3,300 beds and 150 operating rooms of Corewell Health East, directing strategy, recruitment, program building, operations and finance within the Surgical Service Line.
In addition, he served as interim chief medical officer for a year — centralizing the Medical Staff Office and Central Verification Office — and engaged in Bylaw Harmonization and a single credentialing system across sites.
Before Corewell, Dr. Selber served 15 years at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, rising to director of Clinical Research, vice chair and, finally, acting chair of the Department of Plastic Surgery. As acting chair, he oversaw 33 faculty members, 42 advanced practice providers and the most sophisticated microsurgery program in the world.
A pioneer of complex cancer reconstruction, Dr. Selber is credited with performing the world’s first skull, scalp, kidney and pancreas transplant — the first identical-twin transplant for large-scale cancer reconstruction — in 2017. He also introduced robotics to the field of plastic surgery, authoring the definitive textbook on the subject, and founded the Robotic Assisted Microsurgical and Endoscopy Society (RAMSES), where he serves on the executive board. Dr. Selber has written more than 215 peer-reviewed publications and has given more than 450 national and international lectures.
Beyond the operating room, Dr. Selber uplifts global health through his service with Doctors Without Borders and Operation Smile. Additionally, he is a board member of United to Cure Cancer, a non-profit that works to expand pediatric oncology care in underserved communities.
Dr. Selber earned a Master of Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health; obtained his MD at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry; completed residencies in general surgery and plastic surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania; and then pursued fellowship training in microvascular reconstructive surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
