The Disability Health Initiative (DHI) at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix (UACOM-P) seeks to address critical gaps in medical education and institutional practices concerning the care of patients with disabilities. Despite nearly 25% of the U.S. population falling into the disability demographic, current medical training frequently overlooks disability-specific care, leaving healthcare providers underprepared and contributing to poorer health outcomes. The DHI aims to bridge this gap by integrating comprehensive disability-focused education into the curriculum while fostering an institutional culture that supports and values medical students with disabilities. By aligning medical education with the diversity of the populations physicians will serve, the DHI strives to improve training, enhance institutional practices, and contribute to a healthcare system that provides high-quality care for all patients.
