Internal Medicine residents doing simulation and POCUS trainingResidents have multiple opportunities to learn and practice ultrasound and procedure skills:

  • POCUS Curriculum: This program is a part of select wards month and is based on the American College of Physicians POCUS curriculum. Residents have protected time for hands-on training in one organ system (i.e., lung exam). The diagnostic exam months are planned to ensure a comprehensive POCUS training over the course of each year.

  • Procedure Team at Banner: Residents rotate through this hospitalist-run team in one-week intervals during their EM and select non-call elective months. Multiple rotations throughout residency and one-on-one teaching from trained ultrasound attendings promotes excellent ultrasound and procedural skills in paras, thoras, LPs and lines.

  • Procedure Team at the VA: Similar to the team at Banner and is starting Spring 2022!

  • Wards, ICU and Outpatient Clinical Care: At both Banner and the VA, residents have ample opportunity to perform procedures and POCUS with appropriate supervision.
