Building an Integrated Faculty Development Program Across the Curriculum<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n
Dr. Kirsten Brown is the Associate Director for Teaching and Learning Resources and Career Development in the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (GWSMHS). She is an Associate Professor and the Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. <\/p>\n\n
Dr. Brown earned her doctorate in Functional Anatomy & Evolution from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2011 and has been a faculty member since 2011. Over the past 15 years, she has held major medical curricular leadership roles, including serving as course director for two integrated preclinical courses and overseeing vertical and horizontal integration of gross anatomy and neuroanatomy. Since 2022, she has worked in the GWSMHS CFE to support faculty teaching and career development. More recently, she has focused her efforts on developing programming around best practices for using artificial intelligence for faculty and students. She developed the peer-led monthly faculty development \u201cArtificial Intelligence Technology Workshop Series,\" and a new clinical elective, \u201cArtificial Intelligence Applications in Healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
Dr. Brown is a medical education researcher who collaborates and publishes on broad topics including anatomy education, standards of excellence for promotion and artificial intelligence. She is the past recipient of the SMHS Distinguished Teacher Award, four Golden Apple Teaching Awards and the 2020 GWU Morton A Bender Teaching Award. She is the second recipient of the endowed Frank N. Miller Distinguished Teaching Professorship (2021-2025). In addition to her excellence in teaching and scholarship, Dr. Brown has extensive leadership and recognition outside of GWSMHS. She is the 2026 Program Chair for the Northeast Group on Educational Affairs (NEGEA) meeting and serves on the American Association for Anatomy (AAA)\u2019s Board of Directors.

Title: Leveraging AI for Medical Education: Precision Education<\/strong>

\nIoannis Koutroulis, MD<\/strong>, an emergency medicine physician at Children's National Hospital and associate dean of MD admissions at George Washington University. He is originally from Greece, where he attended medical school and received a PhD in infectious diseases. He completed residency training in New York and a fellowship in Philadelphia at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and Drexel University College of Medicine. At that time, he also completed an MBA in healthcare management and finance.<\/p>\n\n
As the associate dean, Dr. Koutroulis provides overall leadership in medical student admissions and strategic direction and priorities for the admissions program. He also serves as the school\u2019s representative on inter-school initiatives and university and national committees related to medical school admissions.<\/p>\n\n
Dr. Koutroulis has published work on sepsis, atopic dermatitis, obesity and asthma. Dr. Koutroulis also spends a lot of his time teaching the next generation of physicians. He loves traveling all over the world and his favorite place is Santorini, Greece, where he enjoys the beautiful sunsets.

Overview<\/h2>\n\n
Academic Excellence Day began in 1999 when Maricopa Medical Center (now Valleywise Health) and Mayo Clinic Scottsdale Departments of Academic Affairs developed a program to highlight resident training program research efforts. The program was a success, and in 2004, the Arizona Medical Education Consortium (AzMEC) was asked to participate.<\/p>\n\n
The concept of Academic Excellence Day was developed and approved by all of the Phoenix-area members (all allopathic programs in Maricopa County) and the first city-wide Academic Excellence Day was held in 2005 at Mayo Clinic under the direction of AzMEC President, Michael D. Grossman, MD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
The program was held annually on the first Wednesday in May and rotated at the participatory hospitals until the University of Arizona College of Medicine \u2013 Phoenix formally opened. Each of the participatory hospitals paid a fee to participate based on the number of residents the hospital had and continued that way until 2015 when the MICA Medical Foundation began providing funding each year. In 2020, the format went virtual in response to the COVID-19 pandemic to allow people to participate and judge in the safety of their own space. After two years of a virtual format, 2023 will again be offering a hybrid format of virtual posters and an in-person oral presentation event.<\/p>\n\n
The mission of Academic Excellence Day is to promote an environment of academic excellence amongst trainees in our participating institutions. Academic Excellence Day will provide an opportunity for residents and fellows in training programs in the greater Phoenix area to showcase the volume of bench and clinical research and quality improvement initiatives being performed.<\/p>\n\n
There will be an option to virtually join the oral presentation event through Zoom. A link will be made available and sent to those who RSVP as the event date nears.
