Residents alternate their primary focus every 2 months the first 8 months, the standard core rotations in the first 8 months include:

  • Internal Medicine:
    • Banner University Wards 
    • Veterans Administration Wards
    • Internal Medicine Ambulatory Clinic
    • Banner Medical Intensive Care Unit
  • Pediatrics:
    • Phoenix Children’s Wards (2 months)
    • Phoenix Children’s Outpatient Ambulatory Clinic
    • St. Joseph’s Well Baby Nursery

The following rotations are completed either in the last 4 months of PGY-1 or the first 4 months of PGY-2 (as “Super-Terns”):

  • Internal Medicine:
    • Banner University Wards
    • Veterans Administration Wards
    • Banner Emergency Medicine
    • Adult Neurology or Adult Cardiology rotation
      • Whichever is not done here will be completed in PGY-2
  • Pediatrics:
    • Phoenix Children’s Wards 
    • Phoenix Children’s Developmental Pediatrics
    • St. Joseph’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
    • Valleywise Health Community Health Center (Outpatient Peds)

Completion of Intern role the first 4 months as “Super-Terns” (see PGY-1 schedule for details).

The 8 months of PGY-2 Following the end of the 16-month Internship include:

  • Internal Medicine:
    • Banner University Wards Senior (2 months)
    • Internal Medicine Elective
    • Adult Neurology or Adult Cardiology rotation 
      • Whichever was not done as a PGY-1 is completed here
         
  • Pediatrics:
    • Phoenix Children’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
    • Phoenix Children’s Pediatric Emergency Medicine
    • Phoenix Children’s Inpatient Heme/Onc service
    • Phoenix Children’s Adolescent Medicine

At this point in our training there are increased opportunities for elective rotations. There is slightly more flexibility in Internal Medicine electives by the nature of current ACGME requirements. 

PGY-3 Residents entering a predominantly Internal Medicine year (8 of 12 months on IM) will see more elective time in the PGY-3 year.

PGY-3 Residents entering a predominantly Pediatric year (8 of 12 months on Peds) will see more elective time in the PGY-4 year.

Expected rotations in the final 2 years of training include:

  • Internal Medicine:
    • IM Wards Senior inpatient (4 months)
    • Banner MICU Senior (2 months)
    • Adult Elective rotations (5 months)
    • Banner University Geriatrics
      • Geriatrics will occur in the final IM block of residency as a PGY-4
         
  • Pediatrics:
    • Phoenix Children’s Wards Senior (4 months)
    • Pediatric Elective rotations (3 months)
    • Phoenix Children’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
    • Phoenix Children’s Community Outreach/Advocacy Elective (Outpatient Peds)
    • Phoenix Children’s Pediatric Emergency Medicine
      • Return to PCH PEM occurs in PGY-3
    • St. Joseph’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Senior
      • NICU senior occurs in PGY-3
    • Valleywise Health Community Health Center (Outpatient Peds)
