Pediatric Medicine Education

Didactics

  • Academic Block Conference, Thursday – A dedicated, interactive three-hour learning session designed to build clinical knowledge in pediatric and pediatric subspecialty care. In addition, it offers preparation for the Pediatric Board Exam. Residents are excused from clinical responsibilities during these learning sessions, and all pages are fielded by the attending physicians of the respective teams.

  • Pediatric Grand Rounds – These sessions feature generalists, sub-specialists, and senior residents. A combination of residents, attending physicians, and community physicians are in attendance. Topics range across the pediatrics clinic spectrum.

  • Intern Report – Pediatric ward interns step away from clinical duties one afternoon per week to review a recent case. The session is primarily led by one of the interns but is facilitated by chief residents who expand on learning topics.

  • Noon Report – Senior residents present interesting cases encountered in various clinical settings, typically from the inpatient ward, intensive care unit, or emergency department. Sessions are interactive and supervised by chief residents. A low-stakes opportunity to enhance clinical reasoning and touch on a board-relevant topic.

Clinical Teaching

  • Ward Teaching Rounds – At Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the ward teams are divided based on specialty (i.e., Pulmonary, GI, Renal). This creates a unique opportunity for subspecialty teaching rounds. Resident ward teams round with both pediatric hospitalists and subspecialists, allowing additional time to learn from the experts.

  • ICU Teaching Rounds – Teaching rounds take place each morning at the bedside in the PICU and NICU. These rounds are multidisciplinary, creating a unique environment for teamwork, collaborative teaching, and patient care.
