- Harlan Stone Scholarship Day – Dr. Harlan Stone is a true legend in surgery. He trained a countless number of surgeons over his 40-year career and is known for his fierce commitment to his residents’ education and to excellence in patient care. He was the longtime program director and chief of Surgery at our primary training institution. In his honor, we invite an esteemed professor to give an annual Harlan Stone Lecture during Grand Rounds the week of graduation. Following this, the residents present their quality improvement (QI) work and research .
- Research Infrastructure – The Department of Surgery has a full-time director of Research and two additional staff to help with resident research. In addition, we have the full support of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix including background research support, IRB and statistics. Residents who have projects accepted at national meetings are funded to attend by the residency. Lastly, the department can fund one full-time research resident per year.
