Jonas Marschall, MD MSc

Brief Bio

Jonas Marschall, MD MSc, is a clinical professor of Internal Medicine and division chief of Infectious Diseases at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix and Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix. He also serves as research director for the division, advancing clinical research and quality of patient care.

Dr. Marschall earned his medical degree from the University of Basel in Switzerland and trained in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the University of Bern. He pursued advanced training in hospital epidemiology and infectious diseases at Washington University in St. Louis, where he helped develop a service line for orthopedic infections and conducted research through the CTSA KL2 program.

From 2013 to 2021, Dr. Marschall served as director of Infection Prevention at Bern University Hospital. He created a joint urology–infectious diseases clinic, developed an antimicrobial stewardship committee, and led multi-center research on surgical site infections and other health care-associated infections. He also guided the hospital’s COVID-19 response and held leadership roles, including as secretary for the Swiss Infectious Diseases Society.

In 2021, Dr. Marschall returned to Washington University, where he mentored junior faculty and participated in a division restructuring, enhanced divisional research operations and served as medical director of infection prevention for BJC Healthcare, a 14-hospital non-profit system.

Since joining Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix in 2024, Dr. Marschall has focused on building a premier academic infectious diseases division, delivering exceptional care, conducting impactful clinical/epidemiological research and training future infectious disease specialists. His clinical and academic interests include hospital epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance, orthopedic infections, urinary tract infections, and preventing health care-associated infections.
